Safer hydrogen systems through leak-free valve innovation

This project is advancing a novel leak-free hydrogen valve designed to improve safety, reduce emissions and support the wider rollout of hydrogen infrastructure.

Building on earlier collaborative work between the University of South Wales and Actuation Lab, the project will test and refine the “Dragonfly” stemless valve under real-world hydrogen operating conditions.

The work focuses on improving valve control, sealing performance and durability, including the ability to operate under variable flow conditions needed in systems such as electrolysers, compression and hydrogen storage.

Testing will take place at the University of South Wales’ Baglan Hydrogen Centre, helping move the technology closer to commercial readiness.

By tackling leakage and safety challenges in hydrogen systems, the project could support lower operating costs, reduced fugitive emissions and wider use of hydrogen in sectors such as heavy industry, shipping and aerospace.
It also strengthens South Wales and South West England as a regional hub for hydrogen innovation, testing and commercialisation.
